Pro Musica

         Sheila & Werner Harms

        Young Artist Scholarships

Summary:

Based on artistic merit, consistent and high-levels of achievement, and demonstrated excellence in their chosen area of performing arts, one or more persons will be selected each year to receive Pro Musica’s Sheila & Werner Harms Young Artist Scholarships.  These scholarships, named in memory of the late Sheila Harms (for instrumental) & Werner Harms (for vocal), long-time Pro Musica members, were established for the purpose of assisting and encouraging aspiring young artists to continue their musical education at the college level and beyond.  It is our sincere hope that these young people, whether they choose music performance as a career or not, will continue to develop their skills, will contribute to the artistic landscape of their communities, and will ultimately serve as ambassadors to keep music and the allied arts alive for many generations to come.

Eligibility and requirements:

Eligibility is limited to young musicians between the ages of 16 and 20 who will be or are already majoring in music in college.  There are two separate applications, one for instrumental and one for voice.  Applications, including a quality audition recording, are required to be submitted on or before Pro Musica’s November meeting.  The Scholarship Recipients are required to appear and perform at the April Pro Musica meeting.  Failure to appear and perform for any reason will result in disqualification and forfeiture of any cash award.  The decisions of the scholarship committee shall be final, and no correspondence shall be entered into regarding those decisions.

Award Amount:

The award will be a minimum of $500 and may be adjusted upward as  budget allows based on sustainable funding levels attained through club dues ($500 per year) and additional designated donations.

Application/Nomination Process:

1. The application/nomination process will be publicized to all ProMusica members.  A letter with application and instructions will be mailed and   e-mailed at the beginning of each season.

2. Members will publicize the event and will work with their candidate(s) to encourage them to participate and help assure applications are submitted before the deadline.

3. Applications and audition recording (CD or DVD) must be submitted no later than the day of Pro Musica’s February meeting.

Selection Process:

The Scholarship Committee will screen applications and, if necessary, there may be a follow-up live audition required for finalists in late February to    determine final scholarship recipient(s).  The recipient(s) will be announced at Pro Musica’s March meeting.

Award Presentation Process:

The scholarship(s) will be awarded at Pro Musica’s April meeting where the young artist(s) will perform a 15-20 minute program as the featured artist(s).
